Cheesy Goodness

innitmarvelous_ogJarod had always been fascinated by the world and its many wonders. As a Pretender, he had the ability to learn and master any skill he desired, be anything he wanted to be, do anything he wanted to do.
When he was growing up in the Centre, his life had been carefully controlled by those keeping him captive there. They'd kept him in virtual isolation, shielded from the outside world, and they had done so in the name of keeping his simulation results pure. Jarod had literally known nothing about the outside world except for what he'd been told in order to complete the simulations and projects the Centre had wanted him to.
Soon after his escape from the Centre, he was wandering through a grocery store, just walking up and down the aisles, marveling at each new thing his eyes beheld for the first time. As he started down the pasta aisle, his eyes were drawn to a bright yellow box with the words "Macaroni and Cheese" emblazoned across it. He picked up, and stood transfixed to the package's cover for five minutes. Something about the picture of the cheesy noodles looked enticing to him, and he decided to give it a try.
At home, Jarod carefully followed the instructions on the box, boiling the pasta and squeezing in the creamy cheese sauce. As he took his first bite, he was blown away by the creamy, rich flavor. It was unlike anything he had ever tasted before.
Over the next few weeks, Jarod played around with different ways to enjoy his newfound love for macaroni and cheese. One of the first things he added were bacon bits and hot sauce, which he really enjoyed. Next he tried mixing in vegetables, and although he didn't like that as much, he would still eat that over what he'd always been given to eat at the Centre any day. He then moved on to baking it with breadcrumbs on top, and added different kinds of cheeses. Each variation was more delicious than the last, and he couldn't believe he had gone so long without this simple pleasure in his life.
As he savored each bite of his latest creation Jarod realized that sometimes the greatest discoveries were the simplest ones. He may have spent his life mastering complex skills that other people could not do, but he learned that sometimes it was the little things that brought the most joy.
Whenever he went somewhere new, Jarod made sure to always have a box of macaroni and cheese in his pantry as a reminder that even the most unexpected discoveries could bring a little happiness to his life.
